We are very lucky to have great friends for all sorts of reasons, but when you have great friends who also help you out of all sorts of fixes it is even better and makes you even more appreciative.
Being fridge-less is no fun. We rely so heavily on all of these modern appliances for so much. What about the milk? What about the meats? etc etc. Anyway, friends have loaned us a plug in electrical cool box that they use in their beach hut and so all of the essentials are good and cold and safe. (Probably way safer than they have been for the past few days in a fridge that wasn't at temperature. Anything dodgy was thrown out ... quite a lot then!
The man is coming to look at the fridge tomorrow and I hope it is repairable. It is 5 1/2 years old and these days appliances seem to be built to last about that long and no longer. I looked on the internet at the cost of replacements and oh my goodness - mega bucks. It's a big American job with water and ice and I love it to bits. Not a day goes by when we don't use the ice and water (I really only do cold drinks not hot) so fingers crossed.
I have had a bit of an IT day today and managed, through sheer grit and determination and the utter refusal to be beaten by a computer to crack a problem that was taxing several of us. I was so proud of myself. However, I have seen rather a lot of THIS today!
I had a good day, solving a problem. Nigel not so much. He went to London to see a TV show being filmed but they messed up the numbers and even though he had a ticket he and his mate didn't get in. He was maaaaaaad!
I have been taking part in a digital CJ and completed my final page last night and sent it off to Mary. This is the page
Today I am thankful for
- car sharing - so much more fun
- walks
- problems solves - eventually
- friends who help and support
My 1000 places to visit today was Chicago - yey - been there. OK so been there in the loosest possible sense. We had a stopover there but it was a funny story. It was back in 1983, my very first trip to the US. We had flown from LA to New York via Chicago ... not out of choice, it was the only cheap flight we could get. We landed at Chicago at about 2.30 am and had an hour or so to kill. The airport, as you may expect, was deserted. Whilst meandering airside we spotted a sign that said Welcome to Chicago. Pretty neat to stand underneath and have your photo taken we thought. So we headed towards the sign. There was NOTHING to say we couldn't go right up to it. Nothing to say we would be leaving a secure area. There was a security guard standing right there and no-one else around. So we walked the ten paces past the security guard, took a couple of pictures, and walked back. Oh no we didn't! The security guard told us that as we had entered another area we would have to go all round everywhere to re-enter the secure area we had been in. Um ... we tried to explain that we had just gone 10 paces, we had been in full view of her all the time, she had seen where we had been and what we had done etc. I mean if it had been in Florida the security guard would have probably offered to take the pictures for us! Anyway, she was pretty adamant, she was armed and we were awfully tired so bottom line was, and I guess it was never in any doubt, she won.
Oh yes. I remember Chicago.
There was another remarkable thing there too. It was the first place - and bear in mind this was 1983, almost 30 years ago - that we saw automatic taps. Nij went to the loo and came out grinning all over his face and said I had to go into the loo and see for myself and be sure to wash my hands. LOL How cool was that. It was a really new thing we had never seen before. Stand at the sink, aim your hands in the general direction of the taps and 'whoosh' water. We were easily pleased. I think that might have been BEFORE we were fed up with Chicago.

Some people are so so kind others so downright officious and stupid and very very unhelpful. Hope the second kind get there comeuppance and the first there reward
Such a shame about Nigel's mix up too

Congrats on the computer fix! I worked this evening, and the copier was jammed (I think it had been jammed most of the day). My years of teaching and using a different copy machine every two years gave me enough experience to unjam the machine and get it running. It may not work tomorrow, but at least busy people were able to make their copies tonight :-)
Karen, I had to laugh at your automatic taps story.
My dh and I chuckle at times of how "the country bumpkins" came to the "big" city during some of our vacation experiences. We lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, for 23 years. The TALLEST building in town was 7 stories. We were riding an elevator to the 12th floor in Kansas City, Missouri, during one of our "Outside" visits. Our ears popped at the great height!! ;-)
There was another passenger in the elevator (do you call them "lifts"?). When he saw our expressions and heard us mention our ears popping, he looked at us as though we had just landed from Mars!!
