Apart from making inchies over the weekend, and loving them, and apart from another top secret project that I can’t share, but that I am really really pleased with (yes it is Design Collective work and all will be revealed in the fullness of time) I also did a few travel pages.
This is one of them I completed on Saturday morning, all about Yellowstone
National Park
. http://www.nps.gov/yell/
We had such an incredible trip when we did our Wild West tour in 2004, seeing so many unusual places. Yellowstone
has to be one of the most unusual of all. It had verdant meadows, such as where we watched the buffalo play, a deep canyon, a stunning lake, rivers and, of course, lots and lots of thermal activity. Yellowstone
, the very first national park, has more thermal features than any other place on earth. Over 2/3 of all geysers found on earth are in the park – over 300 of them – and there are also thermal springs and pools, mud springs, mud volcanoes and steam vents.
It is an incredible place to visit and you see sights that seem, quite literally, out of this world. We did the obligatory stop at Old Faithful
, which was fun, but quite a long wait and then not as impressive as I had hoped for. One of the places that impressed us was Grand Prismatic Springs. It is one of the largest and most spectacular springs in the park. It is 90 meters (300 feet) across and 50 meters (160 feet) deep. In the center of the pool the water is 87° C (188° F)—too hot to support life. In the cooler water along the edges of the pool, however, colonies of thermophilic (heat-loving) cyano-bacteria and algae thrive. Yellow, orange, and red pigments are produced by the bacteria as a natural sunscreen. As a result, the pool displays a spectrum of colors from the bright blue of the center to the orange, red, and brown algal mats along the edges. Located next to the springs is the gigantic Excelsior geyser (The large picture on the page) displaying the same wonderful colours.
I am loving making this travel album of places in America
– but can already see I am going to have to buy copious refills.
What fantastic photos - like something from a film set - fantasy almost. Fabby LO Karen.
